pilot apprenticeship programme open for applications (updated July 2019) pilot apprenticeship programme Leeds Airport has opened apprenticeship scheme for aspiring pilots, providing successful applicants with the chance to develop their careers in the aviation industry and became an airline pilot on Boeing B737NG. Those enrolled in the programme will also have the opportunity to work with expert mentors as they prepare for their all-important Type Rating. This will include regular jump seat experience, eleven hours of SEP flying to stay current and an in-house JOC course, all aimed at building up candidates’ skills as they prepare to start their piloting careers.

The apprenticeship scheme will be based at Leeds Bradford International Airport and Jet2’s commercial offices in Leeds. That means that successful applicants will get a comprehensive look at the entire business operation, including Contact Centre, Operations, Finance, Human Resources and practical experience in the cockpit to working alongside the engineering teams. 

Those applying are expected to already possess the UK-issued Frozen ATPL Pilot’s Licence, a current First Class Medical and a valid UK driver’s licence, as well as having passed the ATPL Theory exam and either an APS MCC course or an MCC and JOC course. The company also asks that they demonstrate strong verbal and communication skills, and be up to speed on office-based IT systems.

Requirements to apply for apprentice scheme:

  • UK issued Frozen ATPL Pilot‘s Licence
  • Class 1 Medical
  • Valid UK driving licence
  • Completed APS MCC Course or MMC and JOC course
  • Strong ATPL Theory exam results (editor note: suppose 1st time pass)
  • Follow requirements for regular training/flying
  • Perfect English both verbal and written
  • Experience in office IT systems

The selection process should consist of (based on previous years):

  • Video interview (remotely from your home)
  • Aptitude test, including basic Maths and Physics (remotely from your home)
  • Personal interview
  • Group task
  • Simulator check

Jet2 Airline believes the apprenticeship programme is a great way to attract promising young pilots and keep them within the company. In return for their commitment, successful applicants are being promised swift career progression and a competitive salary and benefits package. The scheme will take approximately 12 months to complete and the salary should be around £20,000 annually.

Upon successful completion of the full-time apprenticeship (40 hours per week), will provide the candidates with a fully bonded Type Rating and they will enter their commercial aviation careers at the rank of Second Officer on B737NG. The carefully planned course schedule is designed to give apprentices a complete 360-degree understanding of the business, in addition to the hands-on flying experience they need to kick-start their careers as pilots.

Cadets will have the chance to fly from nine UK bases and two bases in Spain (Alicante, Palma de Mallorca), giving them the opportunity to travel and see more of the world. Its unveiling comes at an important moment for, as the airline has just been nominated one of the Top 10 Airlines in the World for the second year in a row. The company has also just taken delivery of its 34th B737-800NG aircraft.
