What is standby duty?

Standby duty is the crew’s responsibility to be on standby (hence the name) to operate a particular flight just in case anyone calls sick or cannot fly due to unforeseen circumstances. Different airlines have different policies regarding it. The most common one is that you must be within an hour’s reach of the airport. During standby duty, it is best to stay at home (near your base) and keep your uniform and equipment ready to go.

Though during the standby period, it can be challenging, life at times can be like a mystery and, at the same time, exciting. You do not know what will unfold.
